A Passion for Education: David Smart
Over the next several months, the Converse Annual Fund will spotlight the newest members of the Converse College Board of Trustees. These six individuals support the College with both their time and talent, helping our students to become transformative leaders who see clearly, decide wisely, and act justly. This profile of David Smart is the fourth of the series.
What inspired you to become a member of the Converse College Board of Trustees?
I have a passion for education and a passion for liberal arts education, so I have been involved with my college Indiana University and I also have two children that went to liberal arts schools. I see the lifelong benefit of liberal arts education.
Thinking through your personal goals, what life accomplishments are you most proud of? What would you like to check off next from your bucket list?
The accomplishment I am most proud of is having three fantastic kids and a fantastic wife. Professionally, I am proud of the opportunity I have had to have been all over the world (5 years in the UK, 3 years in Australia, California, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, SC, 26 different countries total). My bucket list consists of my continuation of life long learning.
What are some of the overall impacts you hope to make during your tenure on the Converse College Board of Trustees?
I hope to maintain the outstanding tradition while also helping the college grow and evolve.
Why do you think it’s important to give to the Converse Annual Fund? What program/area of Converse will your next philanthropic gift support?
We need to maintain this jewel in Spartanburg and continue to support it and grow it.
During the COVID-19 quarantine, was there a particular activity, project or hobby that you most enjoyed?
I reinvested in running.
What is one fun need-to-know fact about you?
I worked in the construction industry to put myself through college.
