Weekly Athletic Update for September 2-7, 2002
The Converse College Volleyball team’s off to a great start after opening up at the Catawba Tournament going 2-2. Their wins came against Augusta St. and Winston-Salem State University while their lone loses of the season were dropped to Catawba College and Armstrong Atlantic University. Junior setter, Gretchen Williams (Camden, SC) was named to the All-Tournament Team in honor of her accomplishments. Williams averaged in 15 games 6.8 assists, .6 kills, and .2 blocks. Making her debut in purple and gold was freshman right side attacker, Leslie Shain (Joliet, IL). Shain started all matches, totaled 8 aces, 24 digs, and 21 kills. Senior defensive specialist, Lauren Bowers (Camden, SC) recorded a season high 10 aces in one match.
Next the All-Stars traveled to North Greenville College where junior outside hitter Trish Hess (Lexington, SC) led the way. Hess led all players with 8 kills, 4 aces, and was 3rd in digs with 7. Williams handled the offense with 21 assists and 3 kills. Junior and senior middle blockers Tia Felder (Cayce, SC) and Rebekah Gillespie (Greenwood, SC) took control at the net with a combined 8 blocks and 14 kills.
Anderson College fell next in the hands of the All-Stars on September 4th. The All-Stars started and finished the match never trailing and managed a season high 58 digs (19.3per game). Felder successfully handled Anderson both offensively and defensively with a team high 13 kills and 10 blocks. Another season high recorded was Williams with 32 assists (10.7apg) 5 blocks, and 11 digs.
September 7th marked the first-ever All-Star Quad Match at the PAC. Participating teams included Pitt CC, Spartanburg Methodist, and Belmont Abbey. Fans watched as no team came within 21 points of Converse in any game and the All-Stars kept their undefeated win streak at home going to 19, going 3-0.
